LODD Lawrence Park VFD - Aerial Device Failure 04/08/08 - Black Cloth hangs from the Lawerence Park fire station today after fallen brother Michael D. Crotty passed away this afternoon. Michael D. Crotty was a well known deputy fire chief with Lawerence Park FD and was recently hired at the City of Erie FD. Lawerence Park FD was dispatched to assist Harborcreek with a working industrial fire at Port Erie Plastics, 909 Troupe Road. Crotty and his fellow firefighters from lawerence park were at the scene of the working industrial fire when Lawerence Parks aerial (289) had a catastrophic failure when a portion of the master stream waterway separated from the main ladder, fell and struck chief Crotty. Crotty was air lifted by Lifestar to Hamot ER where he was Pronounced dead. Chief Crotty was operating in a command role at the time of the failure. The reasons for the catastrophic failure is undetermined at this time. Our sincere condolences to Lawerence Park VFD, Harborcreek VFD, and especially to the Family and friends of Chief Michael D. Crotty.
Essentials Class Finally Over For Some GFD Members 4/05/08 - Congratulations to kim and ashley and everyone else that completed all four modules of essentials of fire fighting class! Dobler Hose had taken 558 to there class to fill air bottles during there live burn session at franklin township burn tower. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Another Brush Fire Keeps GFD Busy 4/03/08 - Another brush fire in the same day keeps Dobler Hose Busy. Around 1700 hrs Girard was dispatched for a 1 acre brush fire with exposures on rt 20. 553 responded and arrived to find a 1 1/2 acre brush fire with exposures of multiple houses. 553 had command 558 and 557 arrived and 557 crew started helping 553 crew with extinguishments assignments. 558 crew started a fire line to stop the fire from growing. Command asked dispatch for 649 and 644 from springfield. 649 and 644 arrived as the fire was put under control. 649 and 644 helped with hot spots and water supply. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- First Brush Fire of the Year 4/03/08 - Brush fire season starts early for Girard. Today around noon we were dispatched for a 1 acre brush/grass fire in front of Bob Ferrando in Girard. Lake city Fire was dispatched for an engine to assist. Girard Engine 553 and LCFC Engine 563 responded to the scene.
